CHOREOGRAPHING ARCHITECTURES

Premiere November 2022
Deutsches Architektur Zentrum DAZ

CHOREOGRAPHING ARCHITECTURES is a choreographic research and creation project undertaken by Sasha Amaya bringing together architects and choreographers to discuss ideas around space, materiality, process, and purpose. Combining her dual background in these disciplines, Amaya enters conversations with architects and dancers: how can these two disciplines exchange with one another?

In her new choreographic study, CHOREOGRAPHING ARCHITECTURES, created and presented at the Deutsches Architektur Zentrum, Amaya takes questions and approaches from architects about space, process, and desire as a starting point for the creation of her new work.

In addition to four performances of the choreographic study, a programme of public events open to the community to explore the interstices of architecture and dance, and the acts of seeing and sensing, offer different pathways into contemplating this subject together.

Funded by National Performance Netz, die Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien, und NeuStartKultur, and supported by the Deutsches Architektur Zentrum.

‘‘This choreographic work spun itself from the ground up... Almost imperceptibly, we slowly build up the sound, the speed of our movement, our verticality until, at the end, we are ‘dancing to music’. Watching material construction is also like this for me: nothing is happening, and then everything is happening, and then all of a sudden we are just living with, or even in, this new structure. I was inspired by that architectural dynamic.’’

‘The work combines the materiality of this room with research into the emotional aspects of the space itself. In doing so, Amaya succeeds in creating a performance in which sensuality toward space is an equally important way to relate with how we understand, measure, and exist in it… the performance offers an opportunity to inhabit a place through both the formality and the softness of the movement, where the corporeal presence of the dancers and the audience occupy a critical position towards the architecture.’
